Scope and Content Note
This subseries consists of documents related to teaching and instruction by Carmen de Lavallade from circa 1939-2007. There are choreographic notes and research materials; instructional drawings, notes, outlines, and syllabi; and music scores for dance performances.
Choreographic notes relate to the repertory of John Butler (circa 2002) and research material written by Lester Horton on choreography (circa 1939). Dance instruction includes syllabi from Adelphi University (Garden City, New York) and Brigham Young University's College of Physical Education-Women (Provo, Utah). Materials from classes such as "Foundation Work" (undated), and "Contemporary Barre" (undated) include instruction notes, reading material, and stick figure drawings. There are several notes, drawings, and marketing materials for "Body Games," a workshop method created by de Lavallade and Diane Gallagher (circa 1993-2004). Correspondence included with dance technique material contains letters from Milt Davis and Shu-Chin Yang.
Music for dance performance includes scores for Dedication to Jose Clemente Orozco choreographed by Lester Horton, with correspondence (circa 1961). It also includes the scores "O don fatale" for an unidentified work by Paradigm (undated) and "The Fifth Wheel," a collaboration with Jane Ira Bloom and Joe Grifasi (undated).
