Subseries 6.1
Administrative papers, 1930-2013
Boxes 29 - 38

Scope and Content Note

This subseries consists of Geoffrey Holder's administrative papers from 1930-2013. Invoices and receipts document purchases of artist and dressmaking materials, flowers, food, hotels, and medical services, as well as sales of Holder's paintings. Contracts and agreements include contracts for performances in House of Flowers (1955) and with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet (1956) (New York, New York). There are also publishing agreements and release forms for Holder's books Adam (1986) and Black Gods, Green Islands (1969). Loans and consignment agreements document the sale and use of Holder's personal art collection, including in exhibitions at the Studio Museum of Harlem (New York, New York) and the Katonah Gallery (New York, New York). Deposit statements primarily document earnings from The Wiz (1975) and Timbuktu! (1978), including royalty disbursements from The Wiz music recordings and tour.

Production materials include budgets and expenses, contact sheets, and schedules and itineraries for works such as The Odyssey of Anna in her Red Pumps (circa 1990), Krakatoa: East of Java (1968), and Bernice Johnson Reagon's opera The Temptation of St. Anthony (circa 2001-2004) directed by Robert Wilson. There are several contracts and itineraries for Holder's lecture tours with W. Colston Leigh, Incorporated (New York, New York) and Program Corporation of America (White Plains, New York).

Holder's advisory board, union, and society memberships, such as with the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries (New York, New York), the Screen Actors Guild and the United Scenic Artists Local Union 829, are documented by membership cards, professional journals, and meeting agendas. There are also various notes, such as short writings about voodoo that include mention of Dougla (1974), and notes regarding the 1989 adaptation of House of Flowers directed and costumed by Holder. Travel papers and personal papers include baptism and school records, passports, and immigration-related forms and applications. Files relating to one of Holder's oldest friends and collaborators, Jacques Sigurd, include clippings from articles written by or about Sigurd, medical records, passports, and lease agreements. There are also several contracts related to Holder and Sigurd's collaborations on Phantom of the Opera (circa 1983-1991), Yoko (undated), and with the American Ballet Theatre.
