Drawings and renderings, 1954-2010

Scope and Content Note

This subseries consists of drawings and renderings from circa 1954-2010. It contains costume, figure, and landscape drawings; general sketches and portraits; set designs; and storyboards. Renderings include fabric swatches and images generated for productions that were not drawn by Holder but were created or organized by him.

Storyboards include Cindy and the Brown Paper Bag (undated), The Golden Aura of Araura (undated), Hansel and Gretel and the House of Fruit Cake (undated), Mr. Orpheus Black (2005), The Odyssey of Anna and her Red Pumps (circa 1988-1991), and Sister Alice in Wonderland (circa 1998-2001). There are costume drawings of House of Flowers (1987), Prodigal Prince (1998), Timbuktu (1979), The Voodoo Tragedy (1978), and The Wiz (1975).

Some drawings are accompanied by reference clippings (newspaper and magazine clippings Holder used as reference for projects). Some reference clippings were used as cityscapes and other backgrounds for scene mockups.

This subseries also contains general figure drawings and portraits, both unbound and in sketchbooks. Some works were not created by Holder, such as portraits of Holder by other artists and sketches by Léo Holder within sketchbooks they shared.

Arranged in alphabetical order by subject.

Processing Note

All portfolios received from the donor were kept in original order, unless size of document warranted rearrangement for preservation purposes. Rearranged material was organized by size, from small to large, or stored in smaller folders.
