Video recordings, 1931-2018
Scope and Content Note
The subseries includes video recordings of award ceremonies, classes, commercials, events with family and friends, interviews, lectures, promotional appearances, television, movie and live performances, rehearsals, and reference material from circa 1931-2018.
The bulk of material in this series is related to performances choreographed, directed, and performed by Holder and de Lavallade and include costumes, excerpts, interviews, music, photographs, and rehearsals. Several iterations of The Wiz (1975-1992) are excerpted or shown in full and include interviews with Holder. Repertoire for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Dance Theatre of Harlem created by Holder and de Lavallade included in this subseries are Belé (circa 1957-1999), Dougla (circa 1974-1992), Banda (1982-2010), Prodigal Prince circa 1954-2010), and Sweet Bitter Love (circa 1997-2019).
Holder and de Lavallade's personal and professional relationships with family, friends, and colleagues are represented through recordings of family events, as well as commercial and original recordings of the lives and works of collaborators such as Alvin Ailey, Bob Cato, Josephine Baker, John Butler, Katherine Dunham, and Gus Solomons Jr. and Dudley Williams of Paradigm (circa 1996-2009).
Several reference materials are also included in this series including voodoo-related recordings and other television recordings that do not feature Holder or de Lavallade.
