Appraisal Note

Curators of African American Collections, Pellom McDaniels, III, and Clint Fluker, acquired the collection as part of the Rose Library's holdings in African American theater and the arts. Processing

Arranged and described at the collection level by Meaghan O'Riordan, July 2021. Books and periodicals in the collection were identified by the donors with blue and yellow dot stickers. Yellow dotes mean they were related to a project for which the text had been optioned or were being considered for optioning. Blue dots mean they were part of Hooks' personal library and either signed or significant to him in some way.

Audiovisual material mostly had handwritten labels that O’Riordan transcribed, so sometimes information may be incomplete or unclear.

Collection Description

Biographical Note

Robert Hooks was born Bobby Dean Hooks on April 18, 1937, in Foggy Bottom, Washington D.C., to Mae Bertha Ward and Edward Hooks. He is the youngest of five children. His father died in a work accident on the railroad in 1939.

Hooks played the lead in his first play The Pirates of Penzance at the age of nine. Hooks attended West Philadelphia High School (Pennsylvania) from 1954-1956, joined the drama club, and began acting in plays by William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett. After graduating in 1956, he joined the Bessie V. Hicks School of Theatre (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) to pursue a career as a stage actor while simultaneously worked at Browning King, a men's tailor shop.

In 1959, Hooks moved to New York to pursue acting. He made his debut in 1960 in A Raisin in the Sun, replacing Louis Gossett, Jr., who would be performing in the film adaptation. Later he stepped into the Broadway production of A Taste of Honey; The Blacks; Ballad for Bimshiretitle>; and The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Any More. He won an Emmy for producing the PBS special, Voices of Our People: In Celebration of Black Poetry (1982). He was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1985. Hooks also received both the NAACP Trailblazer Award and Image Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005.

Hooks originated the role of Clay in Amiri Baraka's Dutchman in 1964, as well as roles in Where's Daddy? and Hallelujah, Baby! Hooks won a Theatre World Award for the former and was nominated for a Tony Award for the latter. While performing these roles, he simultaneously starred in NYPD, making him the first African American lead on a television drama.

In 1964, Hooks founded The Group Theatre Workshop, a tuition-free environment for disadvantaged urban teens who expressed a desire to explore acting. It was folded into the Negro Ensemble Company he founded with Douglas Turner Ward and Gerald S. Krone in 1967. From 1969-1972, Hooks served as an original board member of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters (New York, New York). Responding to the 1968 Washington, D.C. riots in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Hooks took a leave of absence from the Negro Ensemble Company to create The D.C. Black Repertory Company (1970-1981) to further explore the ability of the arts to create healing. The Company structured the first prison-based arts program in the United States at Lorton Prison. In 1992, Hooks co-founded Arts in Action with writer Lonne Elder, III, which was a film and television training center located in South Central Los Angeles, California. He also founded the Negro Ensemble Company of Los Angeles (1994-1997) because so many of the New York members had relocated to the West Coast.

Hooks is the father of actor and television and film director Kevin Hooks. He married Lorrie Gay Marlow on June 15, 2008.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Robert Hooks from 1955-2018 and includes scripts, printed material, contracts and financial records, notes, correspondence, writings, books and periodicals, photographs, and audiovisual and born digital material documenting Hooks' career as an actor and producer. Most of the scripts were received by Hooks for consideration both for acting and for his production company with some scripts written by Hooks. Printed material is about Hooks, his production company, and film and television shows associated with him. Contracts and financial records, notes, and correspondence are primarily related to his career as an actor and his production company with some personal material included. Writings include drafts of screenplays and screenplay ideas, as well as drafts and ideas for his memoir. Books and periodicals include those signed or inscribed for him, as well as those that he was considering optioning or did option for production. Photographs consist mostly of headshots and other professional images. The audiovisual material is mostly film, television, and stage productions featuring or directed by Robert Hooks with some productions directed by Kevin Hooks. In particular, there are interviews with Robert Hooks, several episodes of his show interviewing celebrities, The Urban Roundtable, screening copies of films under consideration for Academy Awards, and multiple episodes of ER (directed by Kevin Hooks) and NYPD. Much of the audiovisual material consists of recordings from the sets of television and movie productions and may contain dailies or unedited footage or otherwise differ from the final produced product.
