Scope and Content Note

This series consists of biographical and subject notes kept by Jaffe in the course of his work and study. The vast majority of these notes are biographical in nature. Typed on one or more index cards, a biographical entry might typically contain name, title, family relationships, notes, or a narrative outlining events in an individual's personal life or public career. Frequently, a picture of an individual, either an actual photograph or a clipping, is attached to the card(s) for his or her entry. Other notes, also typed on index cards, concern subjects, places, or organizations such as Chinese Buddhists, Afghanistan, the Chinese army Training Center, China Correspondent (a magazine), the Korean Independence Army. These entries also contain some clippings, pictures, or maps attached to cards.

These cards remain as they were originally arranged: subdivided by nationality or groups of nationalities, and then arranged alphabetically by the proper name of the person, organization, or place. Related material may be found in Series 2, Subject Files on Individuals, and in Series 8, Reference and Sources.
