Collection Description

Biographical Note

Joseph Sparks Jones (1924-2012), was a forester with the St. Regis Paper Company in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and joined the United States Naval Reserve in 1942 as a Gunner's Mate First Class in the LCI (Landing Craft Infantry), serving on the USS LCI-L #5 and USS LST 1109. He entered Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) on the GI Bill following World War II and graduated with a BS degree in forestry. Jones married Helen Theroux in 1944.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Joseph Sparks Jones from 1924-2003. The papers include correspondence, photographs, personal and family history, and printed material. Correspondence is from 1937-2003 and includes family correspondence during Jones' service in World War II as well as correspondence with politicians, newspaper editors, and other individuals. World War II correspondence is mostly to his wife and includes a few vague accounts of battles in North Africa and the Pacific as well as an experience with battle fatigue. The majority of the correspondence in the collection documents Jones' conservative political views on civil rights and left-wing political organizations, communism, foreign affairs, and local and national politics. Jones was a supporter of conservative Republican candidates including George Wallace. Photographs are of Jones and other family members and include images taken during World War II. Personal and family history materials consist of Jones' baby book, grade reports, genealogical materials, military records, and financial records. Printed material includes newspaper clippings, some of which are by Jones, postcards, a right-wing pamphlet from 1965, and a book documenting the history of the Landing Craft Infantry during World War II, in which Jones is listed. The collection also includes correspondence, photographs, newsletters, and membership lists related to the LCI Flotilla Reunion Association.
