Scope and Content Note

Series 2, Correspondence, 1956-1989, contains letters from family, friends and associates, publishing companies, presses, production companies, students, and readers of his works. Other correspondence includes letters about speaking engagements and honors and awards. Among the many notable correspondents are Jewel Spears Brooker, Cleanth Brooks, Fred Chappell, Brainard Cheney, William Cobb, Harry Crews, Donald Davidson, James Dickey, Sally Fitzgerald, Jessie Hill Ford, Ben Forkner, Michael Hargraves, Walter Havighurst, Harper Lee, Andrew Lytle, Frederick Manfred, Flannery O'Connor, M. L. Rosenthal, Monroe K. Spears, William Styron, Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren, Floyd Watkins, and Melvin B. Yoken. This correspondence has been divided according to type, i. e, individual correspondents; publishing companies, presses, production companies, readers' services; and readers and students. It is then arranged alphabetically by name within each heading.

The correspondence soliciting Madison Jones's papers by Boston University and Auburn University located in Box 14: folder 20 have been removed and placed in the office files of the Special Collections department. Placeholder pages have been inserted in the file noting the items which have been removed.
