Publisher correspondence, 1954-1983
Box 23
Scope and Content Note
Publisher correspondence consists of correspondence between Killens and publishing houses from 1954-1983. Most of the correspondence is between Killens, his agents, and the publishing houses that published his novels, including Alfred K. Knopf, Beacon Press, Trident Press, and The Dial Press. A smaller amount of correspondence consists of negotiations for smaller publications such as chapters and articles. Rejection letters for books, most notably Great Black Russian, are also located here. Publisher correspondence relating to legal issues and book publicity can be found in Series 8: Personal Papers, while letters recommending specific corrections on drafts have been kept with the appropriate drafts in Series 2: Writings by Killens.
