Series 3
Writings by others, 1936-1989
Boxes 60-76; OP2, OP5

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of critical works about Killens, works of Killens's students who went on to become prominent writers, and works of established and aspiring writers. The majority of the material consists of typescripts sent to Killens, including poetry, novels, plays, screenplays, short stories, essays, speeches, and theses. Occasionally, correspondence with Killens or publishers accompanies the typescripts. Of particular interest are drafts and proofs of works by Maya Angelou, Alice Childress, Ossie Davis, Mari Evans, Ernest J. Gaines, Nikki Giovanni, Vincent Harding, Langston Hughes, Loften Mitchell, and Louis Reyes Rivera. Published works by other writers can be found in Series 4: Printed material.
