Series 1
Writings of Thomas Kinsella, 1952-2001
Boxes 1-62,72-88; OP 1-89

Scope and Content Note

Among the writings by Thomas Kinsella are many drafts of poems (including several early verse plays and later verse translations) and a small number of prose works. While these manuscripts are largely undated, the following arrangement approximates the chronology with manuscripts generally grouped by the collection title they first appeared in. Within chronological volumes, however, poems are listed alphabetically for ease of reference. Individual poems that were published in more than one collection are filed under the title of the first collection they appeared in. Cross references have been provided when drafts of a poem are filed with a related collection. Unpublished poems have been arranged alphabetically by title or first line.

This series also contains material related to the various Peppercanister prospectuses that Kinsella prepared as well as related files regarding printing, binding, copyright, and marketing. Some clippings of reviews will also be found with manuscripts of the work.

Subseries 1.2, Translations and Anthologies, contains material that was considered more usefully archived by order in which it appears in the published version. As well as this, the chronological order has been preserved as far as is possible.

See Series 6 (Unprocessed additions) for drafts of Marginal Economy, Collected Poems, 1956-2001, Readings in Poetry, Littlebody, Citizens of the World, Man of War, and A Dublin Documentary.

Arrangement Note

Organized into five subseries: (1.1) Poetry, (1.2) Translations and anthologies, (1.3) Critical writings, (1.4) Other writing, and (1.5) Unfinished projects.
