Appraisal Note

Randy Gue, Assistant Director of Collection Development and Curator of Political, Cultural, and Social Movements Collections, acquired this collection as part of the Rose Library's holdings in journalism and the Civil Rights Movement. All material originally received with the collection has been retained.

Processing

Arranged and described at the file level by Sarah Quigley, August 2021. Collection material remains in the creator's original order physically. Research files are physically arranged into broad subject areas, such as Black journalists and the Black press, white journalists, national "mainstream" press, southern white press, organizations, and media types, then alphabetically by file title. Quigley inventoried existing file titles, only including dates when they were originally part of the title, and imposed intellectual categories to aggregate related materials in the description. Files are described in the finding aid in alphabetical order to facilitate access, particularly for subjects with files across multiple boxes. The biographical note was provided by Hank Klibanoff; Quigley edited the information for length.

This finding aid may include language that is offensive or harmful. Please refer to the Rose Library's harmful language statement for more information about why such language may appear and ongoing efforts to remediate racist, ableist, sexist, homophobic, euphemistic and other oppressive language. If you are concerned about language used in this finding aid, please contact us at rose.library@emory.edu.

Collection Description

Biographical Note

A native of Florence, Alabama, Hank Klibanoff earned his bachelor’s degree in English at Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri) and his masters in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois). He spent six years as a reporter in Mississippi, three years at The Boston Globe (Massachusetts), and 20 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer (Pennsylvania), three of which were as the Midwest correspondent based in Chicago (Illinois). He joined The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Georgia) as managing editor for news in 2002 and left the paper in 2008, after which he joined the faculty of Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia). He is a professor of practice in the Creative Writing Program at Emory, where he teaches non-fiction and was awarded the Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award (2020).

Klibanoff and his co-author, Gene Roberts, won the Pulitzer Prize in history for their book, The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle and the Awakening of a Nation (2006). The Race Beat explores news coverage of civil rights from the 1930s through the late 1960s, particularly the impact of the black press, the Northern press, the Southern liberal and segregationist press, television and photojournalism.

Klibanoff teaches the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project at Emory, which engages undergraduate students in examining Georgia history through research into unpunished racially motivated killings that occurred in the state during the modern civil rights era. He also hosts a podcast, Buried Truths, which is drawn from the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project and tells the stories of Isaiah Nixon (season one), A.C. Hall (season two), and Ahmaud Arbery (season three). The program has won Peabody, Robert F. Kennedy, national Edward R. Murrow, and American Bar Association Silver Gavel awards.

Klibanoff serves on the John Chancellor Excellence in Journalism Award committee at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, the advisory board of the Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism fellowships, and the content advisory committee of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia. In Spring 2021, Klibanoff was nominated by President Joe Biden to the newly created Civil Rights Cold Case Records Review Board. The five-member board will examine all records held by the federal government related to civil rights killings from 1940 to 1980 and determine which records can be released to the public.

Scope and Content Note
