Collection Description

Biographical Note

Mary Lamar Knight McConnell, author, journalist, and lecturer, was born in 1898 and was the daughter of Georgia historian Lucian Lamar Knight. She married Felton McConnell (Mac) in 1973 and moved to Loveland, Ohio. She was one of the first woman news correspondents for United Press International and the first woman on their Paris staff (1930-1935). Afterward, Knight traveled in the Far East, then worked in the U.S. Office of War Censorship through the end of World War II. She earned an undergraduate degree (1922) from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and a degree in librarianship from San Jose (California) State College (1968). Knight's thesis ("The Chinese Fox") for her degree in librarianship, published as a children's fantasy, The Fox that Wanted Nine Golden Tails (1969), had been published in Tokyo, Japan (1955) under Knight's Japanese name, Kishi Mariko.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of printed material, correspondence, a thesis, certificates, photographs, a sculpted bust of Knight, memorabilia, scrapbooks, a diploma, galley proofs, and an audio tape. Materials pertain to Knight's family, career, and travels, and to her book, The Fox that Wanted Nine Golden Tails. Photographs are of Agnes Scott faculty members, government and military leaders of Knight's acquaintance, and others, and include daguerreotypes of Knight's ancestors; an audio tape is a lecture by Knight on family history. Letters are to Knight from journalists and others including the prince of Annam (Vietnam); there are also some letters of Harry Stillwell Edwards, and of Lucian Lamar Knight. The thesis is Mary Knight's "The Chinese Fox." Galley proofs, thesis materials published as Knight, Mary, The Fox that Wanted Nine Golden Tails (New York: Macmillan Company, 1969).
