Gift of Elliott Levitas, 2001, with subsequent additions in 2017

Custodial History

Elliott Levitas deposited approximately 237 linear feet of the material with the Rose Library in 2001. Due to the lack of a formal gift agreement, the collection remained closed to research and was stored in an offsite storage facility. Prior to transferring offsite, Rose Library staff repacked the collection into archival storage boxes and created an inventory and preliminary finding aid for the collection. In 2017, Elliott Levitas transferred an additional 7 linear feet of material and completed the deed of gift allowing for researcher access to the collection. The original acquisition was physically transferred back to Emory.

Appraisal Note

Curator for Southern History, Naomi Nelson, acquired the initial 237 linear feet in 2001. In June 2001, Rose Library staff deaccessioned and destroyed 91 boxes of material, including all academy files (1976-1983), all identified case work, and issue mail files that did not include incoming correspondence or that did not serve as the sole topic index to constituent correspondence. Curator for Modern, Political, and Historical Collections, Randy Gue, acquired 7 linear feet of additions in 2017 as part of the Rose Library's holdings relating to Georgia politics. Beginning in January 2019, Rose Library staff are working to identify additional case work material for deaccessioning and any appraisal decisions will be made by staff as needed.

Arranged and described at the subseries level by Rose Library Staff, circa 2001. Original box numbers appear in brackets after the contents of each box. It appears that staff in 2001 transcribed original file titles for container titles. Additions arranged and described at the collection level by Meaghan O'Riordan, 2018. In 2018 Meaghan O'Riordan also wrote or significantly added to several of the collection level, series level, and subseries level notes.
