Scope and Content Note

The series consists of Samella S. Lewis' correspondence and personal papers from 1952-2010. The correspondence includes speaking invitations from colleges, universities, and museums; administrative correspondence regarding the Museum of African American Art and the International Review of African American Art; requests for information regarding African, Caribbean, and African American artists and assistance with gallery, museum, and traveling exhibitions. Correspondence also contains requests to serve on staff search committees for positions at universities and museums, and personal correspondence with friends, family and artists, including Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, and Richmond Barthé.

Personal papers primarily contain documents concerning exhibitions of artwork Lewis created and/or owned, including price lists, loan arrangements, exhibition checklists, travelling exhibition schedules and gift agreements. There are also administrative records from her time at the International Review of African American Art, the Museum of African American Art, Scripps College (including an appointment calendar), and the World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture. Also included are resumes, awards and certificates, honorary degrees, and scrapbooks mostly containing photographs.

The series also contains a small amount of Paul Lewis' papers.
