Biographical Note

Leroy Earl Loemker (1900-1985), was chairman of the Philosophy Department at Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.) from 1929-1971. Loemker taught philosophy and spent his career translating and studying the work of German philosopher, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, the 17th century, and intellectual history.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Leroy Earl Loemker from 1926-1985. The papers include materials relating to Loemker's career as philosophy teacher and researcher at Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.) from 1929-1971. The collection contains course outlines and notes, including a notebook on "Seventeenth Century book-notes"; Loemker's dissertation (1931) and his scholarly works including papers on Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz and a carbon draft of "Struggle for Synthesis"; miscellaneous printed materials, mainly regarding Leibniz; general correspondence and personal items (1938-1976); and a large number of his published and unpublished papers and notes devoted to intellectual history and American personalism.
