Scope and Content Note

The series consists of photographs from 1843-2010 (bulk 1970-2010). The photographs include both professional and candid images of Lomax documenting his political career as well as his tenure in higher education administration as President of Dillard University and President and CEO of the United Negro College Fund. Noteworthy in this series is the large number of photographs of local Atlanta personalities, such as Maynard Jackson, Andrew Young, Frank Joe Harris, Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King, III, Dexter Scott King, and Shirley Franklin, as well as national and international figures such as George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Jesse Jackson, King Hussein of Jordan, Nelson Mandela, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. There are additional photographs of Maynard Jackson's Mayor's Day for the Arts in 1975, which includes images of George Beaseley, Bill Cosby, Lev Mills, and Sidney Pointier; Charles Prince of Wales' visit to Atlanta in 1977; Lomax's UNCF events which include images of Aretha Franklin, Danny Glover, Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder and others; and a photograph of a young Martin Luther King Jr. at Morehouse College circa 1948. The series also contaiins family photographs, photographs relating to Lomax's genealogical research on the Deignan and Lomax families, and images of and by Pearl Cleage.
