Subseries 2.1a
The Ten Most Wanted White Men, circa 1960s
Boxes 3 - 6

Scope and Content Note

The subseries consists of drafts and other materials relating to Lomax's unpublished novel The Ten Most Wanted White Men. The novel explores violence and retribution as a response to oppression. The novel's central character, Josiah Herron, is an African American man who has spent his life living in fear of terrorism against blacks. While watching the Civil Rights Movement unfold on television, Herron decides to take matters into his own hands and kill ten noteworthy white men who he views as symbols of racism and oppression. The subseries contains no complete drafts of The Ten Most Wanted White Men and only one incomplete typescript draft that consists of multiple chapters. The bulk of the material consists of separate typescript chapter drafts. Also included are early drafts with variant titles. While the drafts are undated, correspondence indicates that Lomax wrote the novel in the early to mid-1960s [see Series 1 Personal papers]. Portions of the novel were self-published in The Tribune. Of particular note is a summary of the novel written by Lomax.
