Series 3
Printed material, 1942-2006
Box 28 and OP 19 - 36

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of printed material by Lomax and other printed material. Printed material by Lomax includes the Los Angeles Tribune, an African American weekly newspaper that Lomax started in 1941. In 1943 Lucius W. Lomax, Jr., who later married Almena Lomax, became the publisher and financier for the Los Angeles Tribune. Lomax served as editor and chief writer for the newspaper until it shut down in 1960. The series includes fairly complete issues of the Los Angeles Tribune for July-September 1955 and October-December 1956. There are also isolated pages and articles from 1942-1960. In addition, the series includes several issues of a later newspaper, also called The Tribune, published by Lomax in 1964 and 1965. Early issues were initially published out of Tuskegee, Alabama, while Lomax was reporting on the civil rights movement, and she continued to publish the newspaper out of Los Angeles after returning to California. The series also includes letters to the editor and articles by Lomax published in the Oakland Post, the San Francisco Examiner, and various magazines. Other printed material includes newspaper clippings about Lomax as well as a few articles written by Lomax's children, Michele Lomax and Lucius Lomax, IV.
