Scope and Content Note
The series consists of writings and other creative works by Mackey such as literary criticism, notebooks and notepads, poetry, lectures and discussions as well as writings and other creative works by others from 1947-2011. The literary criticism consists of Mackey's critical commentary on other poets and writers, including Amiri Baraka, Wilson Harris, Clarence Major, Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, and others. The notebooks and notepads consist of handwritten notes on a variety of topics, including poem drafts, meeting notes, and personal notes. The notebooks are dated and are listed chronologically; most of the notepads are undated and are listed alphabetically based on the first few words on the first page of the notepad. The poetry consists of handwritten drafts, typescript drafts, and page proofs of Mackey's poetry, including anthologies and individual poems. There is a large amount of material from Mackey's multi-volume From a Broken Bottle Traces of Perfume Still Emanate series.
The writings by others consist of writings by Kamau Brathwaite, Wilson Harris, Jay Wright, and other authors, along with two oversized sketches of Nathaniel Mackey. Also included are audiovisual materials that include speaking engagements, guest lectures, and conversations with other writers. There are recordings of Mackey relating to his work Bedouin Hornbook, much of which is copyrighted music, namely recordings of the Glenn Spearman Double Trio. Speaking engagements include Mackey's faculty research lecture at the University of California, Santa Cruz; as a visiting writer at Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne; and conversations and readings at the Poet's House in New York City, New York, and at the Poetry Center in San Francisco, California.
