Collection Description

Historical Note

In 2001, Milton Tambor (1938-) moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and in 2006, he co-founded the Metro Atlanta Democratic Socialists of America chapter (MADSA) with Norm Markel. The original officers included Tambor as Chair, Markel as Membership Secretary, Austin Wattles as Treasurer, and Barbara Joye as Secretary. The organization hosts events and works with other local progressive groups dealing with issues such as single payer health care, environmental justice, and immigrant rights as well as fundraisers for Bernie Sanders and John Conyers. Since 2007, MADSA has hosted the Douglass-Debs Dinner, an annual fundraising event.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of records of the Metro Atlanta Democratic Socialists of America (MADSA) chapter from 2006-2017, collected by founder and chair, Milton Tambor. The records include agendas and minutes, by-laws and foundational materials, conference and event packets handed out at the Democratic Socialists of America 2013 and 2015 national conferences, and subject files and articles collected by Tambor. There are also printed materials that include newsletters and promotional material for the Douglass-Debs dinner.
