Scope and Content Note

The series consists of materials collected by Sidney L. Matthew pertaining to Bobby Jones from 1864-2007. The series includes photographs, newspapers, printed material, correspondence, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. The photographs consist of images of and related to golf and Georgia golfer Bobby Jones from 1864-2007, both originals and reproductions, some undated. Subjects include Augusta National Golf Club, the British Amateur Championship, the British Open Championship, East Lake Country Club, Watts Gunn, Bobby Jones, the Jones family, the Masters Tournament, St. Andrews Golf Club, Alex Smith, Alexa Stirling, the United States Amateur Championship, the United States Open Championship, and the Walker Cup.Of particular note are original photographs of Bobby Jones and other historical figures in golf, including Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen. The newspapers track the entirety of Bobby Jones' golf career, from his first minor championships in the 1910s to his development of the Masters' Invitational Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in the 1930s. The periodicals include 98 issues of The American Golfer from 1922-1935, which are edited by Grantland Rice, O.B. Keeler, and Bobby Jones himself. Correspondence is to and from Bobby Jones and his contemporaries and family members, primarily dating from the 1920s-1970s. Of particular note are Bobby Jones' correspondence; the autographed scorecard from a doubles match with Bobby Jones, Dot Kirby, Charley Yates, and Joyce Wethered; and O.B. Keeler's scrapbook.
