Biographical Note
Frances Augusta Coleman McCandless (1819-1899) was born in West Haven, Rutland County, Vermont, and attended Patapsco Female Institute (Ellicott City, Md.), ca. 1845. She was a teacher for over forty years in South Carolina and Georgia.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of Frances Augusta Coleman McCandless from 1845-1929. The papers include three notebooks containing literature and Latin assignments, poems, notes and a partial draft of a play written by Frances Augusta Coleman at Patapsco Female Institute (Ellicott City, Md.) circa 1845. The collection also includes essays, accounts, and letters, most of them written by Coleman as a student; a book regarding the history of the Pynchon family (1885), and biographical information pertaining to Frances A.C. McCandless, including McCandless family genealogy; and a copy of the Emory Phoenix (1929).
