Collection Description
Biographical Note
Mr. Charles H. "Pete" McTier was born in 1939 in Shellman, Georgia, to Methodist minister, LeRoy McTier and his wife, Julia. He graduated from Emory University with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1961 before joining the university's administrative staff.
In 1971, he joined the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation Inc., as secretary and served in various capacities from 1977 to 1988 before becoming its president in 1988 and leaving that post in 2006. In 1998, he took over as a director of Coca-Cola FEMSA S.A.B de CV, a Mexican multinational beverage company headquartered in Mexico City, Mexico which operates the largest independent Coca-Cola bottling group in the world.
McTier also served as an Advisory Board Member of SunTrust Bank of Georgia and SunTrust Bank Atlanta and serves as a Trustee of Emory University. He serves as a Trustee of the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, Lettie Pate Evans Foundation, Ichauway Inc., the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation. As president of four foundations - the Woodruff, Joseph B. Whitehead, Lettie Pate Evans and Lettie Pate Whitehead - McTier was tasked with granting millions to support education, health care, arts and culture, the environment, human services and civic affairs. As of 2004, the Woodruff Foundation, with assets of more than $2 billion, granted $104,139,757 to grant seeking organizations.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains records, 1963-2017, that document the philanthropic work funded by the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, and Lettie Pate Evans Foundation with McTier as director. These records contain correspondence from 2000-2006 as well as subject files and grant files from 1973-2015 that he utilized as for his work in granting funding to various projects. There are also administrative files that were handed down from predecessors, Boisfeillet Jones and Joseph W. Jones.
