Collection Description

Historical Note

Mead Corporation sponsored five conferences on education from 1965-1970. The first three conferences were sponsored by the Westab Company, which was acquired by the Mead Corporation in 1966. The first conference was held in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1965 and was entitled "Humanities and the Schools." The second and third conferences, "The Thrill of Learning" and "Those Who Teach Children," were held in Tucson, Arizona in 1966 and 1967. In 1968, the fourth conference, "The Frontiers of Learning," was held in Como, Italy. The final conference was held in Jamaica in 1969 and was entitled, "The Seat of Heat." Among the participants were Stanley Kauffman, Robert Shaw, Stephen Spender, and Arthur Koestler.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of audio and video recordings of the five conferences on education sponsored by the Mead Corporation from 1965-1970. Also included are the published reports of four of the five conferences; the report from "The Thrill of Learning" is not present.
