Peck, Daniel, 1844-1928. Daniel Peck letters, 1862-1865, 65 items
MF1 4 Letters printed in the Jamestown Post-Journal (N.Y.), February 6-25, 1961. 31 of them by Daniel Peck, Private in Co. E, 9th New York Cavalry Regiment, and one by his brother David, Private in Co. E, 112th New York Infantry Regiment, and one by an unknown soldier, a friend of the Peck family. The letters are written to Peck's sister, Rachel Peck, a school teacher in Chautauqua, N. Y., the home of the Pecks.
MF1 5 Original letters written by Peck, 31 to his sister Rachel Peck and one to his sister Hattie. This is the same Daniel Peck as in item 4 above. These are the original letters and do not include David Peck's letter or the letter of an unknown soldier. Two of the letters which appear in the newspaper series mentioned in item 4 above were not included in the group of originals sent by the donor; these are the following: May 3, 1863 (Stafford C. H., Virginia) and October 17, 1863 (Camp near Fairfax Station). The letter to Hattie is undated, but from the postmark on the envelope and from the content it seems probable that it was written in late May, 1862. [These letters were published in Dear Rachel: The Civil War Letters of Daniel Peek, compiled and edited by Martha Gerber Stanford (Freeman, South Dakota: Pine Hill Press), 1993.]
