Series 2
Writings by Miller, 1911-1976
Boxes 17-25 and OP 3

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of May Miller's writings from 1911-1976 in a range of formats including poetry, short stories, essays, plays, and the draft of an unpublished novel which is restricted until 2016. Present are Miller's earliest writings, beginning with notebooks of she kept as a teenager in Washington, D.C. These notebooks contain poems, early plays, and fragments of short stories and essays. Also included is her work as a student at Howard University, which contains school essays, short story fragments, and the valedictory address she delivered in 1920. The series contains both handwritten and typescript drafts of many of her best known plays, including The Bog Guide (1925), The Cuss'd Thing (1926), Stragglers in the Dust (1930), and Scratches (1929). A significant portion of the series is comprised of handwritten and typescript poems; manuscripts of her poetry collections Into the Clearing, Halfway to the Sun, and The Ransomed Wait; and several drafts of unpublished collections. Many of the drafts are annotated by Miller. Miller's prose includes short stories which contain both handwritten drafts and at least one typescript draft.
