Collection Description
Biographical Note
Homer Dean Minor attended Oxford College (‘38OX) and Emory University (‘40C). He and his wife, Louise, were married in January of 1942. Shortly thereafter Minor was shipped out for basic training at Keesler Field in Mississippi as a member of the 304th School Squadron, U.S. Army. After completing his training, he became a member of the 307th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group, and was sent first to England, then to North Africa, and finally to Sicily during World War II. He returned to the United States in 1945.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of Homer Dean Minor from 1942-1945. The papers include correspondence, diaries, photographs, and other memorabilia. Materials relate exclusively to Minor's service in the Army during World War II. The majority of the collection is comprised of correspondence from Homer Dean Minor to Louise Minor (1942-1945). These letters are quite candid about his life in the service (censor permitting) and describe in detail his voyage to England on the QE2; British social life and customs; walking tours of London; tourist attractions; air raids; distractions such as movies and books; ennui; the African Campaign; scenery in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunis; Italian social life and customs; progress of the allied forces; and homesickness. The correspondence also contains a few letters from Louise Minor to Homer Dean Minor (1944-1945). Because of the Army's restriction against keeping letters from home (as a security measure in case of capture), these are the only letters from Louise to Homer that survive. She sent them while Homer was en route home. The collection also includes diaries that Homer Minor maintained while he was in the Army (1942-1945). Army regulations stipulated that diaries had to be destroyed, again, in case of capture, but Homer defied the rules and brought his diaries home. They are written in the form of a letter to his wife. A small collection of related material includes the March 1945 issue of the Emory Alumnus and photographs of Minor.
