Collection Description

Biographical Note

Gary Monroe is a documentary photographer. A native of Miami Beach (FL) he studied art and photography at the University of South Florida and earned an MFA in fine arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1977. Much of his work focuses on Florida and the Caribbean. Much of his early work documented the Jewish community in South Beach, and in 1980 he received permission to photograph in Haiti and at the Krome Detention Center for Haitian refugees in Florida. His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Florida Humanities Council, and the Fulbright Foundation, among others.

Scope and Content Note

Collection contains prints, negatives, contact sheets, and slides made by photographer Gary Monroe as well as some additional manuscript material and personal papers related to his work and professional activities.
