Collection Description
Biographical Note
James V.M. Morris, Methodist clergyman, was born July 15, 1830, in Spaulding County, Georgia, and died August 14, 1927, in Atlanta, Georgia. He became a minister circa 1853 and retired circa 1904. During the Civil War, Morris was stationed in Sparta, Georgia, to provide for the soldiers and their families, but for most of his career he was a circuit rider and considered Athens, Georgia, his home. He was in Atlanta to preach to the railroad shopmen and was staying with a daughter there when he died.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of James V.M. Morris from 1859-1921. The papers include diaries, financial records, and pastoral records. Morris's diaries include a roll book (1859), entries for pastoral visits (1869), accounts (1892), and memos (1892); the daily weather is documented as of 6 a.m. each day.
