Series 3
Other writings and subject files, 1940-2008
Boxes 13 - 30, OP 1, OBV 1, and AV 1 - 4
Scope and Content Note
The series consists of Nelson's writings, other than speeches, and subject files from 1940-2008. A significant portion of this series consists of newspaper clippings of articles written by Nelson. The series also includes research for Nelson's book, Terror in the Night, about Ku Klux Klan terrorizing of local Jewish residents of Meridian, Mississippi, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) covert operations to end the violence. Research includes interviews with local law enforcement, victims, Ku Klux Klansmen, and residents of Meridian, as well as the FBI surveillance files for many individuals, such as Thomas A. Tarrants, III, Kathy Ainsworth, Al Binder, Sam Bowers, and Roy Moore, among others. Other writings by Nelson in the series consist of statements before Congressional committees, drafts of his book, The Orangeburg Massacre, and drafts of an unpublished memoir. The series also contains files documenting FBI surveillance of Jack Nelson and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's efforts to discredit Nelson's reporting on the organization. The files include correspondence with George McGovern, a transcript of a meeting between Los Angeles Times Washington (D.C.) Bureau Chief David Kraslow and J. Edgar Hoover about Nelson, and Nelson's FBI file. Subject files in the series contain material that may have been used as research for newspaper articles or other writings by Nelson. A small number of files include drafts of articles but most do not.
Arrangement Note
Arranged in alphabetical order.
Terms Governing Use and Reproduction
Special restrictions apply: The series contains some copies of original materials held by other institutions; these copies may not be reproduced without the permission of the owner of the originals.
Restrictions on Access
Special restrictions apply: Use copies have not been made for audiovisual material in this collection. Researchers must contact the Rose Library at least two weeks in advance for access to these items. Collection restrictions, copyright limitations, or technical complications may hinder the Rose Library's ability to provide access to audiovisual material.
Processing Note
For the most part, archivists kept the original order of subject files intact even though some contents may seem unrelated. A few exceptions were made for items that were clear misfiles and identifiable as such by dates or significantly divergent topics. Otherwise, archivists assumed that material is related regardless of whether that relationship is immediately recognizable.
