Scope and Content Note

The series consists of photographs documenting Nunn’s life and career from circa 1900-2010 (bulk 1972-1996). The bulk of the photographs document Nunn’s Senate career, including campaigns, committee work, events, trips, and press appearances, and photograph albums and scrapbooks commemorate foreign trips, visits to military bases, and events. In addition, there are photographs of Nunn’s family, childhood, and early career. Additional photographs belonging to Elizabeth Cannon Nunn can be found in Series 1: Family and childhood papers, and digital photographs can be found in Series 14: Born digital materials.

The majority of the series consists of prints, though some files with prints also contain negatives and contact sheets. In addition, there are a large number of dated but otherwise unidentified negatives. Many of the photographs, including most of the unidentified negatives, were taken by the Senate Photography Studio. Some files, including photograph albums, include correspondence or press releases related to the images.

Processing Note

Nunn’s press office arranged photographs according to subject headings. Archivists retained the original order when possible; photographs originally filed by size were moved to the appropriate subject headings. Loose photographic prints and negatives were interfiled by subject. Archivists in the 1990s assigned unique identifiers to many photographs based on the subject and date. These numbers appear on the backs of many photographs. This system was not continued during processing from 2017-2021. Some photograph albums were disassembled for preservation reasons.
