Biographical Note

Sam Nunn attended the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1956-1959, when he joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he was active duty 1959-1960 and reserves from 1960-1968. He then attended Emory University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Law in 1961 and in 1962 received a Bachelor of Laws (the professional degree offered at the time, which was superseded by the Doctor of Law degree in 1970). Following his graduation from Emory in 1962, Nunn worked from 1962-1963 as Assistant Special Counsel to the Subcommittee for Special Investigations of the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, which was chaired by his great-uncle Carl Vinson. In the spring of 1963, Nunn returned to his hometown of Perry, Georgia, where he practiced law and managed the family farm.

While living in Perry, Nunn became involved in civic affairs and Democratic politics, including serving as president of the Perry Chamber of Commerce (1964-1966). Nunn played a key role in the founding of the Middle Georgia Area Planning Commission, serving as Vice Chairman (1965-1967) and then Chairman (1967-1968). Nunn was a founding member of the Georgia Planning Association (formed in 1968). In his capacity as President of the Georgia Planning Association, Nunn directed the Goals for Georgia Program which was initiated by Governor Jimmy Carter in 1971. The Goals for Georgia program was designed to encourage citizens' participation in statewide planning efforts, and the Georgia Planning Association, with the assistance of the Area Planning and Development Commissions, held a series of regional and statewide conferences on a wide array of topics.

Nunn was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1968, representing Houston County (District 41, Post 1). He served two terms (1968-1972). Nunn was named one of Five Outstanding Young Men of Georgia by the Jaycees in 1972. On March 15, 1972, Nunn announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of personal papers, correspondence, and subject files documenting Nunn's education and pre-Senate career from 1959-1972. The series contains Emory University School of Law files, primarily class notes taken by Nunn during the time he was enrolled at Emory. The correspondence contained in this series is both personal and political in nature. The series also includes materials documenting Nunn's time in the Georgia House of Representatives, including speeches and legislative files.

Personal papers and general subject files primarily relate to Nunn's involvement in civic affairs in Perry, Georgia, as well in as regional and statewide planning associations. There are numerous subject files documenting Nunn's work with the Middle Georgia Area Planning Commission and the Goals for Georgia program. Of particular interest is a file pertaining to Nunn's work with the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee from 1962-1963.
