Scope and Content Note
The series consists of legislative files from 1938-1996 (bulk 1973-1996). The legislative staff assisted in the development of policy positions and legislative initiatives, monitored legislative activities in committees and on the Senate floor, and answered constituent mail about legislative issues. The series documents Nunn’s legislative activities, including bill files containing legislation sponsored and cosponsored by Nunn as well as various voting records and reports. The Legislative Director files include subject files, bill drafts, notes, memoranda, and correspondence. The Legislative Assistant files similarly contain subject files, bill drafts, nomination files, notes, memoranda, and correspondence. Legislative Correspondent files consist primarily of subject files and constituent correspondence. Congressional Fellow files contains the subject files of a single Congressional Fellow whose work focused on international religious freedom and religious persecution issues. In-House Counsel files primarily deal with ethical and legal issues, including financial reporting, and contain subject files, memoranda, and correspondence.

Organized into 7 subseries: (4.1) Bill files, (4.2) Voting records and reports, (4.3) Legislative Director files, (4.4) Legislative Assistant files, (4.5) Legislative Correspondent files, (4.6) Congressional Fellow files, and (4.7) In-House Counsel files.
Appraisal Note
A small amount of constituent casework files found in Subseries 4.3: Legislative Director files and Subseries 4.4: Legislative Assistant files was removed from the collection and shredded.
Restrictions on Access
Special restrictions apply: Investigation files and nomination files containing confidential materials are restricted for 50 years, in accordance with Senate Resolution 474 (96th Congress). Nomination files in the Rief files are restricted until 2046, 50 years from the latest date of creation in the file set. Nomination files in Subseries 4.4: Legislative Assistant files are restricted until 2046, 50 years from the latest date of creation. Nomination files in Subseries 4.7: In-House Counsel files are restricted until 2040, 50 years from the latest date of creation. In addition, personnel files containing confidential materials are restricted by the donor until 2047.
