Scope and Content Note

The series contains materials relating to Flannery O'Connor's personal life and her family's papers from 1864-1972. Papers include personal materials belonging to Flannery O'Connor such as notebooks, school-work, awards, and cartoons. Also included are materials relating to her time at the Yaddo Artist Community, as well as documents on running her farm, Andalusia, and medical issues; travel materials; and financial records. Notebooks contain both academic and personal writings and include diary entries and personal notes. Of particular note is her prayer journal, published in 2014 by William Sessions, ed., where she discusses her faith and includes entries addressed to God. Academic materials consist of report cards, diplomas, and school work from Peabody High School, Georgia State College for Women, and State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) master's program in creative writing (now the Iowa Writer's Workshop). There are also awards both presented during Flannery’s lifetime and posthumous awards including the National Book Award (1964), and the Catholic Press Association Journalism Award (1961)

There are materials about Flannery's healthcare including suggested diets, notes on weight, and suggested courses of action as well as documents on farming such as literature on the proper care of cattle and poultry, handwritten notes on farming equipment and material, farm management instructions, and receipts for farming materials and livestock. Also included are membership and identification cards consisting of a Social Security card and brochure, a membership card for the Young Women’s Christian Association of New York, a Notre Dame lending library card, and an identification card for Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company, based in New York City. Religious memorabilia includes prayer cards, religious illustrations and icons, a first communion prayer booklet, devotional materials, prayer manuals, and religious such as medallions, rosaries, and crucifix pendants. There are also pictures of Lourdes (France) from her pilgrimage there in 1958. Other travel materials include itineraries, hotel brochures, luggage tags, a passport, informational brochures, plane tickets, and letters from travel agencies (1946-1963).

Financial records (1943-1959) include bank statements and cancelled checks, personal financial notes, and contracts as well as other financial records including a rationing coupon fragment, account and check books, and notices from life insurance companies. Bank statements come from both the Exchange Bank and the Merchants and Farmers Bank, both based in Milledgeville, Georgia. Personal financial notes consist of checkbook stubs, receipt stubs, financial notebooks and ledgers as well as handwritten notes on financial exchanges. Book contracts consist of four contracts for the books A Good Man is Hard to Find, Wise Blood, and “A Novel,” all signed with Harcourt, Brace and Company, Inc. from 1954 to 1956. There are also other legal documents detailing Flannery's book royalties. Other financial papers include brochures on stocks and bonds, some handwritten notes, and reports on income from Andalusia.

There is also a small amount of materials from Flannery O'Connor's family especially her mother's side, the Clines. Documents include financial, legal, and printed material.
