Scope and Content Note
The series includes materials created by, collected by, or sent to Flannery O'Connor's mother, Regina (Cline) O'Connor, from 1832-2001. Later materials were created by the Estate of Flannery O'Connor. The records include correspondence, bank statements and financial records, and a travel diary. The correspondence is mainly of a personal nature, and there are a large number of letters from Janet McKane, a friend of Regina O'Connor, who lived in New York City. There are also a significant number of letters and condolence cards sent to Regina O'Connor upon the death of Flannery O'Connor in 1964, and many requests to Regina from students and scholars asking about aspects about Flannery's life. Also included is a handwritten poem by Colleen Ann Cline that appears to be written for Regina. Regina collected family correspondence, so the series also contains family letters from the late nineteenth century regarding family issues. Other correspondence includes letters between the Flannery O'Connor estate and Sally Fitzgerald from 1998-2001 concerning a biography of Flannery O'Connor that Fitzgerald was writing. The bank statements, bills, and financial records document routine transactions, including purchase of personal items. This series also includes printed material and religious paraphernalia collected by Regina as well as writings, business cards, and handwritten notes.
