Scope and Content Note

Subseries 1.1 contains correspondence to Shelton Oliver, including 25 letters from Shelton's half brother Simeon Oliver, detailing conditions of frontier life in De Soto County Mississippi, with frequent reference to family news, crops, slaves, state and national politics, and general financial fortunes and misfortunes. Other family correspondents include William and Sallie Banks, George Gresham, Charles Meriewether, Judith and William Moore, Hugh McGehee, James Oliver, John Oliver, and Mary Lucinda Edmund Taylor.
