Box 4: folders 10-26 - Box 5: folders 1-11

Scope and Content Note

Subseries 2.2 contains the financial records of Shelton Oliver. Of notable interest is a series of letters, dated 1838-1841, to Shelton from Lewis Hawks and Shelton's cousin Berrian Oliver, both of whom apparently served as plantation overseers for Oliver. The correspondence contains information on the planting, harvesting, selling of crops, and on condition and medical treatment of slaves. Other documents contained in the subseries include account statements, general correspondence receipts from wholesale grocers, invoices for cotton and wheat shipments, packing lists, and subscription slips for the Southern Christian Advocate, 1837-1858.
