Scope and Content Note

This series contains published and unpublished writings by Pavia from 1959-1999. The writings include notes by Pavia, published and unpublished essays, book drafts and notes for Club Without Walls, and interviews. The bulk of this series consists of notes by Pavia on the Club and on various topics. The notes on the Club document subjects of interest at the Club and exchanges between participants. Subjects include zen, Picasso, history, abstraction, and symbol, and participants include Aristodimos Kaldis, Landes Lewitin, and Arshile Gorky. The notes on topics document Pavia's research and thoughts on such topics as stream of consciousness, space, sculpture, color, Marcel Duchamp, Hilla von Rebay, Jackson Pollock, and abstract expressionism.

The published and unpublished essays include material related to It Is articles, talks given, and Pavia's reflections on the art world. Of special note are the folders containing his manifesto on "Non-History and Art History," a distillation of his personal philosophy on art reflected in all of his other writings. The book drafts and notes for Club Without Walls are in both manuscript and typescript form and include different versions of the chapters that were included in the book and draft fragments that were not used in the book and demonstrate Pavia's process in writing the book. The interviews were given by Pavia for films and books by others and feature Pavia recounting the history of Abstract Expressionism and discussing individuals such as Hans Hofmann.
