Series 5
Printed material,
1913-2005
Boxes 37 - 53; OP1-OP10
Scope and Content Note
This series contains printed material from 1913-2005, with the bulk of the material dated from 1920-1980. The series contains printed material by and about Philip Pavia, exhibition catalogs, posters, gallery schedules, invitations, press releases, clippings, and periodicals related to twentieth century art, primarily in the United States. Materials related to Philip Pavia are collected together and include art catalogs, invitations, and programs related to his work.
The exhibition catalogs, invitations, and posters that make up the bulk of the series are connected to many prominent twentieth century artists, especially the abstract expressionists. Many of the invitations fold out into posters. The posters are for exhibits of Jasper Johns, Roy Liechtenstein, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Motherwell, and Robert Smithson, among others. There are exhibition catalogs for Conrad Marca-Relli, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, and Elaine de Kooning, among others, many with introductions by Frank O'Hara and Dore Ashton. Exhibition invitations and catalogs document many of the major New York City galleries from the 1950s through the 1970s, including the Betty Parsons Gallery, Robert Elkon Gallery, 55 Mercer Gallery, Leo Castelli Gallery, Sidney Janis Gallery, Richard Feigen Gallery, Dwan Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art. The series also contains a clippings file and a number of art and literature periodicals from the 1940s-1970s, some of which are rare.
