Biographical Note

Mansfield Theodore Peed (1857-1925) graduated from Randolph-Macon College (Ashland, Va.) in 1878. He taught mathematics and astronomy at Emory College (Oxford, Ga.) and at Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.) from 1889-1925.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of papers of the Mansfield Theodore Peed family from 1864-1963. The papers include Peed's school notebooks (1887), textbooks, and some of his writings; correspondence pertaining to his teaching position in mathematics and astronomy at Emory College (Oxford, Ga.) and at Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.) from 1899-1925; and Peed's letters to his wife, Ann Fulton Peed from 1889-1892. The papers also contain diplomas, certificates, family photographs, miscellaneous papers, and correspondence to Peed's daughters, Virginia Hamilton Peed and Eugenia Peed Erwin, and to his grandson, Jack Erwin. The collection also contains correspondence related to the Palmer Institute and the Southern Commercial Teachers Association. Virginia Peed was a secretary-treasurer of the association; the family connection to the Palmer Institute is unknown.
