Scope and Content Note

The series consists of files relating to James A. Porter's career at Howard University from 1935-1970 and includes teaching and administrative files documenting Porter's roles as head of Howard University's Art Department and director of the Gallery of Art (1953-1970). Teaching files include course materials, syllabi, lectures, student work, exams, bibliographies, reading lists, and notebooks. Teaching files include term papers and other research by Porter's students, such as Starmanda Bullock Featherstone. Noteworthy among these are course development materials on "African Art and Architecture from 1947-1969," and "Negro Art in the Americas from 1938-1962." The series also contains documents relating to courses entitled "How the White Artist Saw the Negro, 1600-1870," "Fine Arts Criticism," "Prints and Book Illustrations," and "Introduction to the History of Art."

Files relating to the Howard University Art Gallery include catalogs, materials documenting gifts and loans, project proposals, and exhibits. Exhibit materials include both student exhibits, and special exhibits, such as Ten Afro-American Artists of the Nineteenth Century: An Exhibition Commemorating the Centennial of Howard University and Minna Citron's 15 Year Retrospective Exhibition. Also included are materials relating to Porter's involvement in the renovation and development of the Gallery of Art. Administrative files include professional correspondence and materials pertaining to Porter's involvement in the Art Student-Faculty Committee, the Committee of Department Heads, and the Graduate Council.
