Scope and Content Note

The series consists of personal photographs and photographs of artwork from 1937-2001. Personal photographs are of James A. Porter; his wife Dorothy Porter Wesley; students; colleagues; and Dorothy's second husband, Charles H. Wesley. There are also photographs (sometimes including negatives or film canisters) of cityscapes, landscapes, and artwork taken by James A. Porter during his trips to Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Senegal or acquired at local museums. Other photographs are primarily of artwork and include images of bas-reliefs, masks, paintings, portraits, sculptures, and sketches from museums and galleries around the world, as well as Nigerian art, paintings by Claude Clark and Claude Lockhart Clark (slides), and cards acquired at the IFAN Museum of African Arts (Dakar, Senegal).
