Scope and Content Note

The series consists of printed material from 1882-2003, relating to the life and career of James A. Porter, his wife, Dorothy Porter Wesley, and daughter, Constance Porter Uzelac. It includes printed material by and about the Porter family and other printed material relating primarily to African American art and culture. Printed material by the Porter family contains articles, book reviews, and forewords to fliers, handbills, programs and brochures written by James Porter. There are also art catalogues compiled by him as well as his sketches and drawings printed in journals, books, brochures, and on postcards. Printed material by the Porter family also includes advertisements and descriptions of James Porter's exhibitions as well as articles and reference aids by Dorothy Porter Wesley together with fliers and handbills promoting her books and talks. Printed material about the Porter family contains articles devoted to James Porter and Dorothy Porter Wesley; reviews of their books; catalogues of James Porter's exhibitions; and material about the artistic and other events organized in their memory.

Other printed material consists of art and book catalogues, fliers and handbills, programs and brochures, advertisements, journal articles, book reviews, postcards, newsletters, press releases, newspaper clippings, and other materials relating to the career of James Porter and other artists. This material describes artistic, cultural and educational events, conferences and workshops; some of these materials advertise archives, libraries, museums, and galleries. The newsletters include information on art and culture, archives, auctions and collectibles, education, museums, and libraries. Also present is promotional material for events and talks solely featuring Porter, material for exhibitions in which Porter's work was featured among other artists, and materials relating to Howard University. The subseries also includes material collected during James Porter's travels to Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Some of these items are written in languages other than English, mostly Dutch, French, and Spanish.
