Collection Description

Biographical Note

Lizzie Dean (L.D.) Ramsay was born September 28, 1894 in Toccoa, Georgia. She was the daughter of Andrew H. Ramsay (1832-1909) and Sarah Azalea (Zaidee) Jarrett (1846-1933). Andrew H. Ramsay was one of Toccoa's pioneer citizens. Zaidee Jarrett was the daughter of Thomas Patton Jarrett, whose father, Devereaux Jarrett, lived across the Tugalo River from Andrew Ramsay. Several Ramsay children intermarried with Jarretts.

Lizzie Dean Ramsay married Captain Farish C. Chandler of the U.S. Army. He was the son of Isaac Chandler of Banks County, Georgia. Lizzie and Farish C. Chandler had four children: David Chandler, Andrew Doyle Chandler, Carter Chandler, and George Chandler.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of the Ramsay family from 1827-1974. The papers include correspondence, legal documents, genealogical records, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, printed materials, and other papers. The correspondence contains letters between Ramsay and Chandler family members, mostly discussing family news. Several of the letters from F.C. Chandler to his four children in the 1950s discuss current events, including southern agriculture and the blight of the boll weevil, politics, and race relations. The genealogical records, probably collected by Laurie [Neville] Ramsay, include notes, newspaper clippings, and letters detailing the Jarrett, Chandler and Ramsay family lineages. The legal documents in the collection include land deeds and indentures relating to transfers of land in Stephen County, Georgia and Habersham County, Georgia, owned by the Ramsay, Jarrett, and Chandler families. The collection also contains a large number of images of Chandler and Ramsay family members during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The photographs, mostly unidentified, are in a variety of formats, including cabinet cards, ambrotypes, tintypes, and carte de visite. There is a small amount of printed material in the Ramsay family papers including a copy of a 1951 issue of the North Georgia College quarterly, "The Bugler," and a ticket for the Toccoa Rail Line.
