Collection Description

Biographical Note

John Rogers Reid (1934-1977) was born in LaGrange, Georgia to Reverend John Amos Reid and Annie Reid. John Amos Reid served in the United States Army during WWI from 1918-1919. John Rogers Reid's wife, Mattie Jester Reid, was a nurse who graduated from the Beaumont School of Practical Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia in 1951.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of the John Rogers and Mattie Jester Reid family from circa 1934-1969. The collection includes papers from several family members: Annie Reid, James Amos Reid, John Rogers Reid, Lizzie Mae Reid, Lottie Reid, Mattie Jester Reid, and Willie Reid. Family papers consist primarily of financial and insurance records, with a few other documents such as James Amos Reid's application for a veteran's pension. Also present are photographs; printed material; a sermon by Reverend L.G. Long, pastor of Flipper Temple A.M.E. Church in Atlanta; and a play script by Alfred Sutro. Photographs are mostly unidentified, with the exception of photos of Mattie Jester Reid. Photographs and printed material also include items from the Beaumont School of Practical Nursing.
