Appraisal Note

Randy Gue, Curator of Political, Social, and Cultural Movements Collections, acquired this collection as part of the Rose Library's holdings in photography and the history of Atlanta, Georgia. Archivists removed and shredded duplicate photographs, personal financial and medical records, and printed material that did not document Rhodes or his work. Appraisal decisions were made by Head of Collection Processing, Sarah Quigley, in consultation with Randy Gue.

Collection Description

Biographical Note

Marvin Rhodes (1949-2017) was born in Spearsville, Louisiana, to Minor Marvin and Emma Hazel Brown Rhodes. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He earned a bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Virginia) and a master's degree in photography from Georgia State University (Atlanta), where he studied with John McWilliams. Rhodes published two books of photography: Time on the Street (1983) and Testify! Vietnam Veterans in Photographs and Interviews (1985). He also taught photography at the Atlanta College of Art (Georgia), the Southeastern Center for the Arts, and Kennesaw State University (Georgia). His work has been exhibited around Atlanta and is part of the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum (New York), the High Museum of Art (Atlanta, Georgia), the San Francisco Museum of Art (California), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York, New York).

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists primarily of photographs by Marvin Rhodes from circa 1940-2006 and includes prints, contact sheets, negatives, slides, Polaroids, and digital photographs on CD. The photographs include portraits of individuals that were published in Rhodes' book Time on the Street, as well as portraits of Vietnam veterans, which were published in Testify! Vietnam Veterans in Photographs and Interviews. There are also photographs of Elvis Presley impersonators, drag performers, weddings and other events, and portraits of unidentified individuals. There are numerous photographs of residents of a nursing home, originally meant to be used in marketing materials for the facility. The nursing home never used these photographs, so Rhodes created an exhibit from them entitled "Hope I Die Before I Get Old"(1993). There are a significant number of negatives documenting protests during the 1988 Democratic National Convention held in Atlanta, including images of Hosea Williams, Julian Bond, and Lenora Fulani. The collection also contains video recordings and a small amount of Rhodes' personal papers, including printed materials, correspondence, and professional materials such as release forms and grant applications.
