Series 1
Journals, appointment books, and notebooks, 1974-2003
Boxes 1 - 14, 212

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of journals, appointment books and literary notebooks from 1974-2003. Redacted portions of journals kept by Rushdie prior to 1989 are available to researchers. The journals include dated notes of both a literary and a personal nature and often have related sketches and comical drawings. They document Rushdie's creative process and often reveal the development of his writings, primarily Midnight's Children (Journals 1-4) and The Satanic Verses (Journals 9-13) and the private notes for his unpublished novel "The Antagonist" (Journal 1). While Rushdie often dated his entries at the beginning of his journals, this practice was not kept up throughout the individual volumes. In the case when it was unclear, the ending date has been identified as "unknown."

Arrangement Note

Arranged by record type, then in chronological order.

Restrictions on Access

Selected portions of the journals are closed to researchers. Appointment books and notebooks are completely closed to researchers.
