Scope and Content Note

The audiovisual series contains audio and video recordings relating to Rushdie's literary work and political advocacy for freedom of the press from 1981-2008. The cassette tapes included in the series primarily consist of recordings of interviews given by Rushdie between 1988 and 1999, although many items are undated. The video cassettes in the series include interviews of Rushdie and programs focused on his literary work and his experiences during the fatwa. Also included are programs to which he contributed and an interview Rushdie conducted with author Toni Morrison. The series represents a wide range of Rushdie's public appearances, both before and after the declaration of the fatwa in 1989.

Organized into two subseries: (10.1) Audio recordings and (10.2) Video recordings.

Restrictions on Access

Researchers must contact the Rose Library in advance for access to these materials. The video recordings of Rushdie's 50th birthday party, 1997 and his home videos in New York City are restricted.
