Series 6
Subject files, 1976-2006
Boxes 152-161; OP2

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of files including correspondence, unpublished documents, and printed material that provide information on a variety of subjects pertinent to Rushdie. Many of these files document the activities of organizations to which Rushdie belonged, including political organizations such as Charter 88 and literary organizations such as PEN and the International Parliament of Writers. Also present are files relating to existing organizations that supported Rushdie during the fatwa, including Article 19, and others that were founded in response to the fatwa, such as the International Rushdie Defence Committee and the International Committee for the Defence of Salman Rushdie and his Publishers. This series also contains other files of interest, including minutes from the Best of Young British Writers competition in 1992, for which Rushdie served as a judge; governmental reports on/from Nicaragua dating from 1985; and proceedings of the British Parliament and the United States Congress in which Rushdie figures, and material relating to PEN American Center, for which Rushdie served as president from 2004-2005.
